How to Prepare Class 12 Physics from NCERT — Boards, JEE & NEET

Unit-wise Class 12 Physics strategy from NCERT — derivations, numericals, ray diagrams and the chapters that carry the most board marks. Read the guide.

Class 12 Physics has a reputation as the toughest board paper in the Science stream, but its structure is unusually predictable: a fixed set of units, a stable marks distribution, and a derivation-heavy pattern that rewards systematic NCERT work.

Know the Weight of Each Unit

The 70-mark theory paper is dominated by four blocks: Electrostatics with Current Electricity, the Magnetism–EMI–AC sequence, Optics, and Modern Physics (Dual Nature, Atoms, Nuclei) with Semiconductors closing the list. Optics and the two electricity blocks together account for roughly two-thirds of the paper — plan your time accordingly.

Build a Derivation Notebook

A large share of board questions are standard derivations or their one-step applications. From Part I: field on the axis of a dipole, capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor with and without dielectric, drift velocity to Ohm's law, force between parallel currents, and mutual/self inductance. From Part II: mirror and lens maker's formulas, prism deviation, Young's double slit fringe width, and Bohr model energy levels. Write each derivation out by hand until you can reproduce it without the book.

Numericals: NCERT Exercises First

Board numericals stay close to NCERT exercise difficulty. Current Electricity, Ray Optics and the AC chapter produce the most calculation questions. Work with sign conventions carefully in Optics — most lost marks there are sign errors, not concept errors.

Diagrams Score Silently

Ray diagrams (telescope, microscope, prism), the AC generator, and the p-n junction characteristics are asked year after year. A labelled diagram often carries a mark on its own even when the written answer is incomplete.

Modern Physics Is the Best Marks-per-Hour Unit

Dual Nature, Atoms and Nuclei are short chapters with formula-driven questions — photoelectric equation, de Broglie wavelength, Bohr radius and energy, binding energy. If you're short on time, revise these first; they are the fastest marks in the paper.

For JEE and NEET Aspirants

The board syllabus and the entrance syllabus are the same chapters at different depths. Do NCERT completely first — NEET in particular tests NCERT statements directly — then layer entrance-level problem practice on top. Skipping NCERT for a coaching module is the most common self-inflicted wound.
